Numerous pale blue-gray Myrica cerifera fruits coat a slender branch above reddish fallen leaves

Myrica cerifera

Native from the eastern United States through Central America and the Caribbean, it is an evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub or small tree. It develops a dense, spreading crown with multiple stems. Small spring flowers are followed on female plants by clusters of pale blue-gray fruits coated in wax. The fruit coating has traditionally been used to make bayberry candles. Photographed in Virginia.
