Bright orange Mutisia grandiflora rays spread around narrow dark-tipped central florets beside a rock

Mutisia grandiflora

Native from Colombia to Ecuador, this woody climbing plant grows on Andean slopes in cloud forest and subpƔramo scrub. Large orange flower heads have broad pointed ray florets surrounding a conspicuous cluster of narrow, dark-tipped central florets. Each daisy-like head consists of many individual flowers rather than a single bloom. In Ecuador, it has been recorded beside roads and forest tracks, including cloud forest at about 7,700 feet in Pichincha. Photographed in Ecuador.
