Musa (species unidentified)
These large perennial herbs form clumps from an underground corm. Overlapping leaf bases create a pseudostem that supports the broad leaves and flowering stalk. Ornamental forms are grown for their foliage and conspicuous flower bracts, which surround groups of small flowers. Each pseudostem flowers once, then dies after fruiting. New shoots arise from the underground base and continue the clump; these suckers can be separated to propagate the plant. Photographed in Colombia.
