A small tree swiftly growing tree originating from the tropics of Central and South America, the Jamaica Cherry has proliferated across various warm climates globally and also displayed invasive tendencies in certain regions. The sweet fruits, small and round with a red or yellow hue depending on the variety, are abundant and sold in Mexican markets. The medicinal value of this tree is underlined by its rich content of antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds. The leaves are specifically noted for their antioxidant properties, derived from components like sinamat acid derivatives, flavonoids, tocopherols, and coumarin. The antioxidant activity encompasses various flavonoids including flavonol, flavanon, flavones, isoflavones, catechins, and kalkon. Photographed in Juan de Acosta, Colombia.
