Monolena primuliflora
Native from Costa Rica through western tropical South America to Acre in Brazil, this low perennial herb grows on trees, moss-covered rocks or the forest floor in very humid, shaded habitats, often beside streams. Its rhizomes carry a basal rosette of large, fleshy leaves. Flower stalks bear clusters of two to seven blossoms and lengthen as the fruits develop. Small capsules release numerous tiny seeds. In Colombia, it grows from sea level to about 8,500 feet. Photographed in Colombia.
