Three violet Monochaetum laxifolium flowers

Monochaetum laxifolium

Endemic to Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, this scrambling shrub grows in moist mountain habitats at about 4,500 to 6,900 feet. Its sprawling branches spread widely apart. Its flower clusters branch into paired divisions, and the stamens are similar in form rather than strongly differentiated into two types. The calyx lobes lack marginal hairs and fall away after flowering. Photographed in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
