The Ochre-bellied Flycatcher, is a small bird species belonging to the tyrant flycatcher family. It is widely distributed, breeding from southern Mexico through Central America and South America east of the Andes to southern Brazil​​. This bird is commonly found in humid forests, often in undergrowth near water, and is also seen in second growth woodland, semi-open clearings with scattered trees near woodland forages, and along forest streams. Additionally, it inhabits sandy-belt forests in the extreme east​​. Adult Ochre-bellied Flycatchers are about 5 inches tall and weigh around 0.5 ounces. They have olive-green upperparts, and their heads and upper breasts are also green. The rest of their underparts are ochre-colored. They have two buff wing bars, and the feathers of the closed wing are edged with buff. Males are slightly larger than females and feature yellow or orange mouth corners. Juveniles resemble adults but have paler bellies and more yellow coloring. The species is also known for its distinct singing during courtship, which occurs between March and July. Males gather in small groups, singing to attract females, but they do not form pair bonds. After mating, the female is left to build and tend the nest alone, which is a moss-covered ball nest with a side entrance, usually suspended from a root or branch, often over water​​​​. In terms of diet, the Ochre-bellied Flycatcher differs from other flycatchers by primarily feeding on seeds, berries, insects, and spiders. This feeding behavior is relatively unusual for a tyrant flycatcher, as the species gleans or picks small insects off leaves from vines, mistletoes, or trees, and fruits comprise a significant portion of its diet​​​​. The Ochre-bellied Flycatcher is currently classified as 'Least Concern' by the IUCN with a population over 5 million​​. Photographed in Rio Claro private reserve.
