Native to Colombia and Ecuador, it is a tree in the Melastomataceae family. Documented elevations extend from about 6,900 to 7,550 feet. It develops a woody trunk and leafy crown, with purple flowers borne on its branches. Photographed in Putumayo, Colombia.
