Dense green Mentha piperita foliage covers the ground with small toothed leaves

Mentha × piperita

Native to Europe and the Middle East, this perennial herb arose from a cross between watermint and spearmint. Its underground rhizomes spread to form colonies, with upright stems reaching about one to three feet tall. Small pink to lavender tubular flowers appear in dense clusters in summer. Its strongly aromatic foliage is widely used for flavouring foods and drinks. Photographed in Colombia.
