Bright pink Medinilla coccinea buds and small flowers emerge directly from a brown stem

Medinilla coccinea

Native to New Guinea, this tropical shrub belongs to the melastome family. Its small pink flowers develop directly along older stems, forming conspicuous groups among the elongated buds. This placement of flowers on the woody portions of the plant distinguishes its display from species with large hanging terminal flower clusters. Photographed in Florida.
