A yellow Maxillaria lepidota flower extends long red-tipped sepals above broad green leaves

Maxillaria lepidota

Native to western South America and northwestern Venezuela, this perennial orchid grows on trees in wet tropical forests. Short pseudobulbs are surrounded by several leaves, and individual flowers arise at the leaf joints, often with several open at once. Yellow sepals have reddish tips, while the yellow lip has a granular surface bearing pollen-like particles known as pseudopollen. It grows in montane rainforests in Colombia. Photographed in Colombia.
