Maxillaria fractiflexa

Native to Colombia and Ecuador, this perennial orchid grows as an epiphyte on trees in wet tropical habitats. It develops thickened stems called pseudobulbs and produces individual flowers on upright stalks. The narrow sepals curve or roll inward, giving the flowers a distinctive, spidery outline. In Colombia, it is cultivated and grows wild in the Andes at elevations of about 5,600 to 7,100 feet. Photographed in Colombia.
