Native to Ecuador and Peru, this shrub or small tree grows beneath the canopy of wet Amazonian forests. In eastern Ecuador, it occurs in forest valleys, on slopes and ridges, and in secondary forest. It can be a locally abundant part of the forest understory. In Peru, its fruits provide food for wildlife. It belongs to the mallow family, Malvaceae. Photographed in Ecuador.
