Native from central Mexico through tropical America, this climbing shrub grows in wet tropical habitats. Its stems twine around supporting vegetation and can extend about 13 feet. Pink to red tubular flowers end in four spreading lobes and appear in small clusters. The species occurs in forest margins, woodland, savanna, and shrubland, with records from near sea level to about 4,550 feet in Colombia’s Andean and Caribbean regions. Photographed in Ecuador.
