Long red Manettia cordifolia flowers hang from slender stems and end in small pale spreading lobes

Manettia cordifolia

Native to tropical South America, this climbing subshrub grows in moist forest habitats and belongs to the coffee family. Its twining stems carry solitary flowers at the leaf joints. The red corolla forms a slender tube about three-quarters of an inch to one and a half inches long, ending in four small lobes. Stamens project beyond the flower opening. It grows along the margins of gallery forests. Photographed in Peru.
