Mammea americana (Mammee Apple)
Native to southern Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean, this plant is an evergreen tree cultivated in tropical regions. Its white flowers are fragrant, and its large fruits have a thick brown rind enclosing yellow to orange flesh and one to four large seeds. Good-quality ripe flesh is aromatic and pleasantly tart, with a flavor likened to apricot or red raspberry; its texture ranges from firm and crisp to tender and juicy. The flesh is eaten fresh or made into preserves. The seeds are not edible, and seed extracts are toxic to several animals. Photographed in the department of Santander, Colombia.
