Malvaviscus arboreus (Turk's Cap)
A large bush native to southern Texas down to South America. The flowers are found to be rich in bioactive antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer components. The red fruit it bears is edible with a mealy taste. Additionally, the young tender leaves, fruits, and flowers can be consumed raw or cooked, and find their way into salads, herbal teas, and dyes. A popular ornamental in the tropics. Photographed in the eastern Andes mountain range of Colombia (Cordillera Oriental).
