Colombia's Magdalena River Valley looking west from the Andes central mountain range
Magdalena River Valley, Colombia

The Magdalena River Valley stretches through central Colombia between the east and central Andes mountain range. The river itself is the country's principal waterway, flowing over almost 960 miles from its headwaters in the Colombian Massif (Macizo Colombiano) in southern Huila to its mouth at the Caribbean Sea near Barranquilla. The valley is one of Colombia’s richest agricultural zones, producing crops such as rice, cotton, bananas, sugarcane, coffee, and oil palm, along with extensive cattle ranching. The flatlands near the river are ideal for irrigated farming, and numerous tributaries contribute to the fertility of the land.
