Macleania smithiana
Native to Panamá, Colombia and Ecuador, this shrub reaches about 6.5 to 10 feet tall and usually grows as an epiphyte but can also grow on the ground. It often develops a swollen woody base called a lignotuber. Its angular tubular flowers are orange to reddish orange, with a green throat and green lobes. Dense white hairs line the inside of the flower mouth. Spur-like extensions on the corolla lobes and the winged calyx help distinguish this species from related Macleania. The mature berries are translucent white. Photographed in Colombia.
