Macaranga grandifolia
Native to the Philippines and northern Sulawesi, this wet-tropical tree grows in secondary lowland forests. It reaches about 33 feet tall and carries very large leaves that can span about 3 feet across. Young leaves are reddish. Male flowers develop in large, branched clusters, while female flowers occur on separate plants. Its small fruits are capsules with two valves, each tipped with a pair of spine-like projections. Bark, leaves and fruits have traditionally been included in the preparation of basi, a fermented Philippine sugarcane drink. Photographed in Florida.
