Lysiphyllum hookeri (White Bauhinia)
Native to northern and northeastern Australia, this small tree can reach about 33 feet tall and grows in open woodland and monsoon forest. Its spreading crown carries small paired leaflets that resemble butterfly wings, and it may shed some foliage during dry periods. Clusters of fragrant white flowers have five petals and conspicuously long red stamens. It tolerates drought once established. Flat woody pods develop after flowering and contain several seeds. The tree is also grown ornamentally for its distinctive foliage and flowers. It is propagated from seed, whose hard coat benefits from soaking before sowing. Photographed in Lima, Peru.
