Small blue Lysimachia arvensis flowers with pinkish centres open along low green stems

Lysimachia arvensis

Native to Europe, central Asia, the Himalayas, northern Africa south to Ethiopia, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, this small annual or biennial herb has branching, square stems. It is now naturalized almost worldwide, including in the Americas, eastern Asia, Australasia and southern Africa. Its five-lobed flowers may be orange-red, blue, pink, or white. The flowers remain closed in cool or cloudy weather. Tiny round capsules open by a lid to release the seeds. The plant occurs in disturbed ground, fields, coastal habitats, and wetland margins. It can be poisonous to people and livestock if eaten. Photographed in Colombia.
