Native to Colombia, this shrub or climbing subshrub is found in the Andes and Magdalena Valley. Its orange flower heads contain many small florets, with two-lipped ray florets around the edge and tubular florets in the center. Male and female flower heads grow on separate plants. The heads form at the ends of branches and are enclosed by several overlapping layers of bracts. In Colombia, it occurs between about 650 and 8,400 feet above sea level.
