Louteridium donnell-smithii
Native to southern Mexico and Central America, this shrub can reach about 10 to 12 feet tall. Its large, velvety leaves form a broad canopy. The yellow-green to maroon flowers open at night and generally fall by the following morning. Long stamens and the style project beyond the flower, where visiting nectar-feeding bats can contact them. Bats and moths visit the flowers in Guatemala. Rarely cultivated, it grows in botanical gardens and conservatories beyond its native range. It favors shade, rich soil and consistent moisture. Photographed in Florida.
