A bird perches among Lonicera maackii branches bearing paired red berries and opposite pointed green leaves

Lonicera maackii (Amur Honeysuckle)

Native to eastern Asia, this fast-growing deciduous shrub has arching branches. Opposite leaves have long, tapered tips and paler undersides. Paired, fragrant flowers open white and become yellow with age, followed by small, rounded red berries. Birds eat the fruits and disperse the seeds. It is invasive in eastern North America, where dense thickets shade surrounding vegetation. Its ability to retain leaves late in the season and resprout vigorously helps it spread and persist. Photographed in Panama.
