Lobularia maritima (Sweet Alyssum)
Native to the western and central Mediterranean region east to Sinai, Lobularia maritima, or sweet alyssum, is a low-growing annual or short-lived perennial that forms spreading mats. Its tiny, four-petaled flowers grow in dense clusters and have a honey-like fragrance. Cultivars extend the usual white flower color to pink, lavender, purple and apricot. The flowers develop into small, rounded to oval seed pods, and plants readily self-seed. The species is naturalized in the Colombian Andes. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
