Liatris spicata has vivid purple flower heads with numerous fine protruding styles above narrow green leaves

Liatris spicata (Dense Blazing Star)

Native to eastern North America, this clump-forming perennial herb has grass-like foliage and showy purple flower heads. Its flowering spikes open from the top downward. Small corms and shallow fibrous roots support the leafy stems, and plants can be propagated by seed or division. The species grows naturally in moist meadows and similar open habitats. Its flowers feed bees and butterflies, goldfinches eat the seeds, and hollow dead stems provide nesting places for native bees. Photographed in Florida.
