Leucojum aestivum
Native from Europe to northern Iran, this deciduous perennial grows from a bulb. Despite its common name, it flowers in spring in temperate gardens, producing clusters of nodding white bells with green-tipped segments. Plants multiply through seeds and offsets that develop around the bulbs. The species contains galanthamine and has been used as a commercial source of this alkaloid for pharmaceutical production in Bulgaria. The bulbs are poisonous if eaten. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
