Leptospron adenanthum flower with pale lavender-white petals, purple markings and a curled keel

Leptospron adenanthum

Native across tropical and subtropical regions, this perennial climber grows in moist habitats such as thicket edges, swampy ground and river margins. Its stems can root where they touch the ground. The flowers have a rose-colored or white upper petal, paler side petals and a blue to violet keel that coils through roughly three turns. The elongated pods contain nine to fifteen dark reddish-brown, kidney-shaped seeds. Nectar glands on the flower clusters attract ants. In Colombia, it grows from sea level to about 4,270 feet. Photographed in Colombia.
