Long hanging Lennea melanocarpa clusters carry cream flowers with pale pink markings

Lennea melanocarpa

Native from central and southern Mexico to Honduras, this shrub or tree belongs to the legume family and grows in seasonally dry tropical forests and woodlands. It also survives in disturbed vegetation and along roadsides. Its compound leaves have 7 to 17 leaflets, with rounded tips and the largest reaching about 3 inches long. Reddish, pea-shaped flowers hang in elongated clusters, followed by seed pods that become nearly hairless as they mature. Photographed in Florida.
