Lasianthaea fruticosa

Native from Mexico through Central America to Venezuela, it is a shrub or small tree with soft wood. In Costa Rica, it occurs in both wet and dry forests, including the edges of secondary woodland. Its rough, opposite leaves have three prominent veins, and its yellow flower heads contain both ray and disc florets. In Guatemala and Costa Rica, its wood is used to make brooms. Photographed in Colombia.
