Lantana depressa (variety unidentified)
Native to Florida, this low, spreading shrub belongs to the verbena family. Its compact flower heads are yellow or whitish with yellow centres, and unlike those of many familiar garden lantanas, the flowers do not become multicoloured as they age. It is a long-lived perennial associated with dry, sunny habitats. The flowers attract butterflies and bees, while birds eat the fruits and disperse the seeds. Hybridization with invasive garden lantanas threatens wild populations. Photographed in Florida.
