Kopsia arborea (Penang Sloe)
Native across parts of tropical Asia to northern Australia, this small evergreen tree grows up to about 46 feet tall, with gray bark. Opposite, leathery, elliptical leaves have wavy margins and can turn blood red before falling. White tubular flowers open into five narrow spreading lobes and appear in clusters. The blossoms resemble jasmine. Olive-like fruits turn from green to blue-black as they ripen. Seeds sometimes begin germinating while the fruits are still on the tree. The species grows in lowland forests and along forest margins and is cultivated as an ornamental in parks, gardens, and roadside plantings. Photographed in Florida.
