Kohleria tubiflora

Native from Central America to Venezuela and Ecuador, it is a perennial subshrub or shrub of wet tropical habitats. In Nicaragua, it is recorded in evergreen forests along channels and roadsides. Its hairy red to orange flower tubes widen in the middle and narrow again at the mouth, where small yellow lobes may bear purple spots. Hummingbirds pollinate it on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Its capsules release tiny seeds that are shaken out by wind in a manner compared to a salt shaker. Photographed in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.
