Kleinia galpinii (Daisy Paintbrush)
Native to South Africa and Eswatini, this low-growing evergreen succulent shrublet reaches about 1 to 2 feet tall. Erect or ascending stems arise from a soft, fleshy rootstock. Thick, stalkless leaves are oval to spoon-shaped, with smooth margins and a powdery whitish coating. Long flower stalks carry rounded heads of bright orange to red-orange flowers, resembling small paintbrushes. Butterflies visit the flowers. Fine hairs attached to the dry fruits help disperse the seeds by wind. The species grows among rocks and on cliff faces and is cultivated in rock gardens, retaining walls, and containers. Photographed in Florida.
