Juniperus silicicola (Southern Redcedar)
Southern redcedar is an evergreen conifer native to the southeastern United States. It develops dense foliage and a pyramidal, columnar, or oval crown. Older trees may become flat-topped and windswept in appearance. The species is planted as a windbreak, screen, or shelter for wildlife. Its tolerance of salt makes it suitable for coastal landscapes. Established trees grow in varied soils with relatively little attention, while their fragrant wood has traditionally been used for pencils and storage chests. Photographed in Florida.
