Jungia paniculata (Mano de Leon)

Native to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, this Andean herb or subshrub has rounded, heart-based leaves that may be divided into several lobes. The blades can be slightly wrinkled and hairy above, with dense woolly hairs beneath. Branched panicles carry flower heads with white outer florets and yellow central flowers. The species occurs in highland forest, shrubland, and grassland environments, growing between about 7,710 and 10,830 feet in Colombia. It is known locally as mano de león or matico. Photographed in Colombia.
