A tall Jacaranda tree carries scattered purple flower clusters beneath a blue sky

Jacaranda (species unidentified)

Native to tropical and subtropical America, trees and shrubs in this genus usually have opposite leaves divided into many small leaflets. Clusters of tubular flowers with spreading lobes range from blue to purple and magenta. The woody fruits are rounded to elongated capsules that split open at maturity. Their numerous thin seeds have papery wings that help them travel on the wind. Many species are grown as ornamental trees. Photographed in Colombia.
