Ixothraupis rufigula seen from the side with scaly brown and tan wing feathers, black head, and light belly with faint rust-colored throat
Ixothraupis rufigula (Rufous-throated Tanager)

Ixothraupis rufigula is a tanager species found primarily in northeastern South America. Its habitat consists of humid lowland forests and forest edges, typically below 3,300 feet in elevation. It is not found outside its natural range, and it does not adapt to urban environments. This bird usually inhabits the canopy and sub-canopy layers, where it forages in mixed-species flocks, feeding on fruits and insects.

The species is recognized by its distinctive throat coloration, which ranges from orange to rufous, contrasting with yellow underparts and streaked olive upperparts. Ixothraupis rufigula measures approximately 5.5 to 6 inches in length. It is not listed as endangered; current conservation assessments categorize it as Least Concern. Its behavior includes social foraging and occasional participation in mixed-species groups, a strategy thought to aid in predator detection and food location. Photographed in north-western Ecuador.
