Ixora coccinea (Flame of the Woods)


Native to western and southern India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Indochina, this evergreen shrub forms a compact, rounded crown about four to six feet tall. Glossy, leathery leaves accompany dense clusters of red, long-tubed flowers with four spreading lobes. Garden selections offer additional colors. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and the small fruits ripen dark purple to black. It is grown as a hedge, specimen or container plant and can be propagated by cuttings.
