Isidorea pungens (Encinillo)
Native to Hispaniola, this plant is a shrub of seasonally dry tropical habitats. Its narrow, leathery leaves are glossy dark green above and grayish beneath, with sharp tips and curved margins. Red to orange tubular flowers arise in the leaf axils, usually singly or in small clusters. Their mouths flare into several short triangular lobes. The flowers release their pollen before their stigmas become receptive. The fruits are small, woody capsules that split open to release the seeds. Photographed in Florida.
