Iris aphylla has violet upright petals and spreading falls with pale beards and dark veins above green leaves

Iris aphylla (Leafless Iris)

Native to parts of Europe, Turkey, and the Caucasus, this bearded iris is a rhizomatous perennial. Short flower stems may branch and carry blue to violet blossoms. Three upright inner petals alternate with three spreading outer falls. The falls bear a pale beard, sometimes tinged blue, and contrasting veins toward their bases. Green spathes surround the developing flowers. The species varies in stature and floral details. Its rhizomes are poisonous if eaten, and the sap can irritate skin. Photographed in Florida.
