Iresine diffusa
Native to tropical and subtropical America, it is an annual or perennial herb or subshrub with erect, trailing or scrambling stems. It grows in thickets and disturbed places, including seasonally dry habitats. Numerous tiny flowers are carried in branching clusters. Male and female flowers usually occur on separate plants; female flowers have long woolly hairs at their bases. Each small, dry fruit contains one seed. The surrounding woolly hairs help the fruits disperse in the wind. Photographed in Colombia.
