Cluster of red Iochroma gesnerioides flowers and buds

Iochroma gesnerioides

Native from central Colombia to central Ecuador, it is a shrub or small tree of moist Andean habitats. It produces large clusters of red to orange tubular flowers. Hairy leaves, densely hairy cup-shaped calyces and usually enclosed anthers help distinguish it from the closely related Iochroma fuchsioides, which bears fewer flowers. Its fleshy fruits turn from green to wine-red as they mature. Hummingbirds are its principal pollinators. Photographed in the eastern Andes mountain range of Colombia.
