Impatiens sodenii

Native from Kenya to northern and eastern Tanzania, this evergreen shrub or subshrub has fleshy green stems and is cultivated for its flowers. Its toothed leaves are arranged in whorls of six to twelve, a distinctive feature of the species. White or pale pink flowers, sometimes with darker markings, appear singly or in pairs at the stem tips and have a long spur. It can flower throughout the year in mild climates. It has naturalized in New Zealand, where it is classed as an environmental weed. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
