Hyptis mutabilis has slender branching flower spikes with small pale purple blooms and brown calyces in a grassy landscape

Hyptis mutabilis (Tropical Bushmint)

Native to tropical and subtropical America, this plant is an herb or subshrub. Its branched stems bear stalked leaves that vary from oval to diamond-shaped, with toothed margins and often paler, softly hairy undersides. Small flower clusters occur along loose, elongated inflorescences. The pale mauve to purple corollas are shortly two-lipped and enclosed by hairy, tubular calyces. The species inhabits varied settings, including grasslands, shrubland, woodland margins, and wet or disturbed places, and has become introduced beyond its native range. Photographed in Colombia.
