Hydrangea arborescens Hayes Starburst
A cultivated selection of smooth hydrangea, a species native to eastern North America, this rounded deciduous shrub grows about three to five feet tall and wide. Its domed summer flower heads contain many small, double flowers that open pale green and mature to creamy white. It flowers on the current season’s shoots. Its double flowers lack fertile florets and provide little food for pollinators. The plant can irritate sensitive skin and is harmful to cats and dogs if eaten. Photographed in Florida.
