A fast-flowing river cuts through a lush, mountainous landscape dotted with small homes and plantations in Huila, Colombia
Huila, Colombia

Huila is a department located in southwestern Colombia, bordered by Tolima, Caquetá, Cauca, and Meta, and crossed from north to south by the Magdalena River, the country’s most important waterway. It occupies a strategic position in the Andean region, with terrain ranging from high mountain ranges and páramos in the north and west to fertile valleys and tropical forests in the south and east. The department is known for its diverse geography, including portions of the Cordillera Central and Cordillera Oriental, which give rise to its varied ecosystems. The capital city is Neiva, located along the Magdalena River. Huila’s economy is largely based on agriculture, livestock, coffee production, and energy. The department is a major producer of high-quality Arabica coffee. A major natural attraction in Huila is the Tatacoa Desert, a striking dry tropical forest with red and gray rock formations, fossil beds, and an excellent stargazing site due to its low humidity and minimal light pollution. Another key destination is the San Agustín Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It contains the largest collection of pre-Columbian megalithic sculptures in South America.
