Holmskioldia tettensis (Purple Cup-and-Saucer)
Native to southern tropical Africa, purple cup-and-saucer is a branching shrub or small tree. It inhabits low-elevation woodland, thickets, and river-valley vegetation. Opposite leaves vary from elliptic to obovate and may have smooth or toothed margins. Flower clusters develop in the leaf axils and near the shoot tips. Purple to lilac corollas project from broad, shallowly lobed calyces, producing the distinctive cup-and-saucer appearance. The calyx enlarges around the small hairy fruit as it matures. Photographed in Florida.
