Red Hippeastrum peruvianum flowers have broad white central stripes and greenish throats

Hippeastrum peruvianum

Native to the department of Amazonas in northern Peru, this bulbous perennial has large flowers with a distinctive color pattern and a three-part stigma. It has been grown widely in cultivation, especially in California, where it was often considered a hybrid. Like other garden amaryllis, it produces flowers on stout stems arising from an underground bulb. The plant is poisonous if eaten, especially the bulbs. Photographed in Colombia.
